Visitation Policy: Essential Support Person Guidelines

What is an Essential Support Person (ESP)?

Per DSHS, “The Essential Support Person (ESP) is established to assist during times when limitations are placed on visitation due to a public health emergency or other threats to the health and safety of residents and staff. Facilities must allow private, in-person access to residents by ESPs in the resident’s room. This right is subject to reasonable limitations that are tailored to protecting the health and safety of the ESPs, residents, and staff.”

All visitors must adhere to the Core Principles of COVID-19 infection prevention to include:

  • Answering screening questions upon check in

  • Washing hands, or using hand sanitizer, before and after visitation

  • Wearing a mask at all times, even during visit

  • Social distancing during visitation

  • ESP visits are ONE visitor per resident. The ESP is chosen by the resident themselves, their Power of Attorney (POA), or Legal Guardian. This visitor cannot change from day to day.

  • ESP must be 18 years or older.

  • ESP will tell facility when and how long they will be conducting the visit to allow for cleaning in between visitors.

  • Please notify CCC Activities Department 24 hours in advance of your visit, if possible, to accommodate for cleaning.

  • ESP will visit in designated visit locations (SSU Kitchen or Main Dining room), but may visit in the room if resident is unable to visit in designated location.

  • If a resident has a roommate, the facility must call and obtain permission from the roommate to conduct in-room visitation prior to the visit.

  • Visitation upon admission to facility is permitted regardless of vaccination status.

  • If resident is in isolation or quarantine for suspected or confirmed COVID-19 or any other infectious disease process, ESP must adhere to facility PPE use. ESP must be fully vaccinated or provide proof of negative COVID test within the last 48 hours of visit.

  • ESP must go directly to resident’s room and wear a mask at all times for the duration of the visit.

  • If assistance is needed with the resident while the ESP is visiting, the ESP must utilize the call light for nurse/aide assistance.

  • Failure to comply with ESP visitation guidelines or core principles of COVID-19 infection prevention are subject to suspension of visitation.
